Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1 large egg
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
For the Gravy
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, bread crumbs, egg, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to keep the patties tender. Shape the mixture into oval-shaped patties about the size of your palm.
- Brown the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a bit of oil or butter. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side until nicely browned but not fully cooked through. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
- Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and sauté until tender. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir to combine, cooking the flour for about a minute. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens and becomes smooth.
- Simmer the Patties in Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes until the patties are cooked through and have absorbed the savory flavors of the gravy.
Notes
- Don’t overmix the meat to avoid dense, tough patties.
- Cook on medium heat to brown patties without burning.
- Whisk flour and broth carefully for a smooth gravy without lumps.
- Let the dish rest a few minutes off the heat to redistribute juices before serving.
- Adjust seasoning to your taste with extra salt, pepper, or Worcestershire sauce.
